Protest to Stop Recreational Hunting in WA

Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - 09:30

Tuesday March 10 @ 9:30am
Parliament House, Perth

The Shooters and Fishers Party are wanting to open up our parks and all public land for recreational hunting. If this idea gets the go-ahead, western Australian parks will no longer be safe for all other users who enter them, from cyclists, bush walkers, travelers, and families (especially with small children.)

Australia has the highest extinction rate of native wildlife and plant flora than anywhere else in the world. It has been proven that recreational hunting has little to NO effects on reducing feral animal numbers. It has also shown to be detrimental to native wildlife, who are injured or killed by amateur hunters.

Allowing recreational hunting will not only be damaging to the native wildlife but also native plant fora which will be having 4WD’s driving through the bush which means more plants being lost that are important for traditional medicine, food for our critically endangered species and so on.

Parks within Australia are also sacred sites for the aboriginal people who use these parks to practice their culture and beliefs. Allowing hunters to run around with guns in sacred spaces is primarily disrespectful and dangerous to our indigenous peoples.

Since last year when recreational hunting was allowed in NSW the number guns stolen annually was only 1.4, however since the legalization of recreational hunting in NSW the number of guns stolen has risen by a massive 34%!

This means we will see even more guns on our streets in the future and there will be more gun crimes in our neighborhoods. Since they legalized hunting in NSW and VIC there has been 2.4 human deaths annually. 2.4 may not sound like a large amount, but when you consider that 2.4 could be you, your spouse or a family member, it becomes an all-the-more precious statistic.

These issues aren’t only important from an animal right’s standpoint, but clearly it is also important for the safety of your children, friends and neighbors. It is bad enough that animals’ lives are in danger, but when it is us, our children and our friends and family, it’s completely unacceptable! Lives are important! Some hunter’s afternoon of pleasure is not worth more than the lives of others!

Gather with us to tell your local MP’s how you feel about more guns, more violence and more danger in your neighborhoods and your parks!

We will be meeting on the 10 of March in Perth outside the Parliament House! Our intent is the support the Senate in making the right choice in this matter. No Legal Hunting in our Recreational Parks!!
