Protest rally: Defend free speech in Brunswick.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 - 11:00

Demand the right of community groups to have stalls at Barkly Square shopping centre

Cnr Sydney & Glenyon Rds, Brunswick
(outside the Mechanics Institute, next to free speech monument).

The management of Brunswick's busy Barkly Square shopping centre has stopped Green Left Weekly's longstanding Saturday morning stall outside the busy car park entrance. In doing so they tore up an agreement which had run for four years without incident. This ban applies to any community group which may want to leaflet the shoppers as they come and go or to set up an information stall. Everywhere what is really public space is being privatised by profit-mad corporate interests. Free speech is being marginalised and silenced in practice.

Speakers:
Cyndi Dawes (Greens candidate for Brunswick);
Sharon Firebrace (northern suburbs indigenous activist, Black Rights Action Group);
Trent Hawkins (Socialist Alliance candidate for Wills);
Peter Riley (Wednesday Action Group);
Brian Walters (former Liberty Victoria president & Greens candidate);
more to be announced.
