More than 100 people rallied in King George Square on May 18 to commemorate the Palestinian Al-Nakba (The Catastrophe), when Israel was established with the mass expulsion of Palestinians from their villages and homes. Protesters held placards with the names of villages that were destroyed by Zionist forces in 1948.
Speakers condemned the Apartheid policies of the Israeli state from then until now. The rally was followed by a procession through city streets in double file.
Publicity for the rally said: “May 15 marks the Palestinian Nakba day. In 1948, more than 780,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homeland and more than 500 Palestinian villages depopulated and destroyed by Zionist terrorist death squads that were set up in Palestine under the protection of the British mandate.
“On the 64th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba join the ongoing campaign for justice for Palestine and say no to Israeli apartheid, colonialism and occupation.”
