Protest Campbelltown Councils refusal to fly Aboriginal flag

Tuesday, April 5, 2016 - 19:30

Recently 5 council members out of 9 of the Campbelltown City Council in Adelaide voted against a motion to errect a flag pole to fly the Aboriginal flag alongside the australian, state and Campbelltown flags on the front lawn of the council chambers in Campbelltown. It is important to note that Mayor Brewer is for this motion and is passionate about this issue also (read the article).

At the beginning of the councils meeting minutes it states that, "We acknowledge that the land we meet on today is the traditional land of the Kaurna people. We respect their spiritual relationship with this land. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as traditional custodians of the Kaurna land. We will endeavour, as Council, to act in a way that respects Kaurna Heritage and the cultural beliefs of the Kaurna people. " Yet, they will not fly the flag!

As many of us believe that flying the Aboriginal flag is an act of acknowlegment of Aboriginal sovereignty and continuation of culture, and respect for the First Nations peoples of the many countries still in existence today, we find it offensive that the 5 council members refused to support this motion.

So, on Tuesday 5th April we will be attending the next Campbelltown Council meeting with the goal of pressuring the councillors who voted against the motion into agreeing to pass a second motion in support of raising the Aboriginal flag!
