Protest against Vic roads minister

Residents group Friends of Banyule staged a protest on June 20 outside a meeting with state roads minister Tim Pallas. The meeting was an information session about the proposed freeway link between the Eastern Freeway and the Western Ring Road.

The group opposes the freeway because it will damage local parkland in the green belt around Banyule Flats and along the Yarra corridor. The group says these are "among the last truly natural areas in the inner north-east".

The group demands the state government protect this land. Instead of more road building they call for improvements
to the public transport system, and a strategy to reduce reliance on private car use to help cut greenhouse gas emissions.
