By Alex Bainbridge NEWCASTLE — Forty people protested against the execution of former Ogoni leader, Ken Saro-Wiwa, outside the Shell depot in Broadmeadow on November 23. Demonstrators also condemned the Nigerian government's ongoing repression and its complicity with the multinational oil giant Shell. The action was organised by Newcastle university students. Two people, secretly hidden inside the depot, climbed onto one of the large oil tanks to drop a banner linking Shell to the continuing deaths. East Timorese activist, John dos Santos, drew a link between the actions of Shell in Nigeria and its role in East Timor and called for solidarity with both countries. After moving on to a Shell service station, the protesters vowed to take a proposal for a national campaign to the National Union of Students' conference in December.
