‘Mary Meets Mohammad’ was filmed for almost two years in Tasmania, following a story around the Pontville Detention Centre. Here is a brief summary of the film:
Tasmania’s first asylum seeker detention centre opens and local knitting club member and staunch Christian woman Mary is not welcoming of the 400 male asylum seekers from Afghanistan. Mary unexpectedly finds herself in regular contact with Mohammad, a 26 year old Muslim, after her knitting club donates beanies to the asylum seekers in detention. The club inspire a craft and knitting revolution to begin inside the detention centre. Mary has many of her prior beliefs challenged as her relationship with Mohammad deepens.
