The approaching October 12 trial of a young Cairns couple on abortion-related criminal charges shows the need for repeal of the anti-abortion laws. In response, the campaign to decriminalise abortion is gaining strength.

A July 9 book launch with author Caroline de Costa attracted 90 people. Jo Wainer, a long-time campaigner for abortion rights, was a special guest speaker at the event.

On August 30, a large group of campaign supporters wore period costumes at a protest outside the office of state member for Cairns Desley Boyle, to highlight how 19th century laws are being used in the 21st century. Boyle failed to declare her views on repealing the laws when asked in a recent questionnaire.

On September 9, 40 people attended Politics in the Pub where the campaign presented its case for abortion law repeal. Political strategy for the campaign was one of the topics of the debate that followed.

The group of people involved in organising the campaign has grown. On the basis of the work done by the Cairns Women’s Network, Pro-Choice Cairns is meeting regularly.

More than a dozen activists are organising stalls, banner drops and a postcard campaign as well as preparing for an all-day-every-day vigil at the courthouse during the trial.
