Poem: The Fool

When I was young
I had a young man's dreams.
And they were good dreams,
dreams to warm the heart
and guide the brain.
Now I am no longer young
those dreams still seem so fine to me.
They do not dim,
they deepen.
They make more sense,
take firmer shape,
resonate my very being.
A fool once said:
"The man who is not a Socialist
before he is thirty
has no soul.
The man who is still a Socialist
after he is thirty has no brain."
He knew nothing of Socialism
or of man.
He was a fool
I am not
nor ever have been
a fool.
