London-based, Australian journalist John Pilger's latest documentary film, Breaking the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror, has won the gold award in the political category at the prestigious 2004 WorldMedia Festival.

Founded in 2000, the Hamburg-based WorldMedia Festival is the only global competition for all categories of media. This year the festival attracted 300 entries from 23 nations.

Breaking the Silence traces the history of events leading to Washington's "war on terror" and last year's US-led invasion of Iraq.

The film was also a nominee in the best current affairs category in this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards.
