Socialist Alliance is planning an ambitious socialist ideas conference in Perth for the last weekend in June. Featured guest speakers include Socialist Party of Malaysia member of parliament Jeyakumar Devaraj. He will speak about the role of socialists in parliament and the link between parliamentary work and community organising.

Also featured will be Kiraz Janicke from the Green Left Weekly Caracas bureau. She will speak about the latest developments in the revolutionary movements in Latin America and the struggle for “socialism of the 21st century”. One feature of this is the push for a fifth socialist international.

Other topics to be addressed at the conference include: the campaign against the Rudd-Abbott “festival of cruelty towards refugees”; capitalism versus “Mother Earth”; and contemporary Aboriginal rights struggles, including the Ampilatwatija walk-off against the Northern Territory intervention.

Socialist Alliance WA co-convenor and Fremantle councillor Sam Wainwright told GLW the conference will aim to arm participants with the ideas that can be used to campaign against the policies of Liberal premier Colin Barnett and Labor PM Kevin Rudd.

“We’re aiming for this conference to be the most exciting socialist event in WA for quite some time”, he said.
