People's Power Fighting Fund gathers support

Issue

With the removal of Suharto, the Indonesian democracy movement has achieved a huge victory, but it continues to struggle for real democracy. As part of promoting solidarity with the democracy movement, Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) launched the People's Power Fighting Fund at Easter during the Asia Pacific Solidarity Conference in Sydney.

The fund will help those, including the banned People's Democratic Party (PRD), organising resistance to the Indonesian regime now headed by Habibie, It will assist activists in producing leaflets, in establishing offices and strengthening their organisational ability.

At the launch, over $2000 was donated to the fund, including $500 from the Malaysian People's Party, $200 from the Canberra Program for Peace, and $100 from Lismore Friends of East Timor. Since the conference a further $1500 has been received, including $100 from jazz musician Vince Jones, $200 from Sydney ASIET and more than $900 collected by Melbourne ASIET.

To help the Indonesian democracy movement, make a donation to the PPFF. Send a cheque/money order to the People's Power Fighting Fund c/- ASIET at PO Box 458 Broadway, 2007 or deposit it directly into Commonwealth Bank account 2026 1006 0743.
