Passion in Darwin

On the eve of Good Friday, Club Q, Darwin's new queer dance club, presented Passion, its most spectacular and well-attended night so far.

By 1am, when Erica and her Disciples were ready to perform, 300 people had squeezed into two rooms of Darwin's Saloon complex in Cavenagh Street. The 20 performers included two fire breathers and four scantily clad guys, apparently meant to represent crucifixions, who were suspended from the ceiling.

Despite the Christian allusions, the show had the air of a decidedly pagan ceremony. Although the fire breathers had some people nervously eyeing the nearest exit, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the performance and stayed on for the food provided by TUQS (the Territory Union of Queer Students). The dancing and partying continued on until around 4am.

With such a positive response, this new alternative venue looks to have a lively future. Club Q's next special event, on May 13, is titled Disco Inferno (more fire breathers perhaps?).
