Alfalfa House Community Food Cooperative, an organic food grocer in the inner west which has been trading since 1981, is facing the prospect of having to close at the end of January.

As a result of COVID-19 pressures, since last July sales have been steadily declining. The co-op told its members that business was bad at the end of last year and the Members’ Council announced the shop's opening hours would have to be reduced.

On January 11, it informed members that it had to remove the 20% volunteer discount (although a smaller discount still applies to volunteers).

The co-op, which stocks affordable, ethical and organic food in minimal to no packaging, has around 1900 members. It said that unless people renew their membership and spend at least $15 a week, every week, it cannot keep its doors open.

A small team of team of staff and many volunteers are at the heart of the co-op, which has served the community in many ways over the years — including, but not limited to — introducing people to living more simply and healthily.

Members are currently working out how best to survive the COVID-19 pressures, which includes being able to pay staff their leave loading which amounts to $20,000.

The co-op wants to avoid becoming insolvent and having to dissolve.
