Officials 'ignored' illegal sewer dumps

By Bill Mason

BRISBANE — Brisbane City Council staff have turned a blind eye to the dumping of huge amounts of illegal liquid waste into the city's sewerage system, a Criminal Justice Commission inquiry was told on November 2.

An employee of a Brisbane waste disposal company told the inquiry that the companies were dumping untreated or insufficiently treated waste matter directly into the sewerage system via manholes and grease-traps across the city.

Meanwhile, former truck-driver Brian Fox, who confirmed allegations of the illegal dumping, sparking the CJC inquiry, said he had received threatening letters following his revelations.

Fox says he was sacked from the waste disposal company last September after he refused to dump illegal waste on roads and elsewhere.

The CJC inquiry is now set to question Brisbane City Council and Logan City Council officers and senior officials from major waste disposal firms.
