NUS referendum result overturned

Issue

ARMIDALE — On June 3, the University of New England Students' Association electoral tribunal overturned the results of a May 24-26 referendum regarding the association's affiliation to the National Union of Students, ordering a new ballot.

Initially, the result was declared narrowly in favour of disaffiliating from NUS, however the tribunal found serious defects in the conduct of the ballot. One finding was that UNE Students' Association president and Young Liberal member Samantha Aber offered a financial inducement to residential college presidents if they lobbied students in their colleges to vote for disaffiliation.
