NUS National Education Conference

By Ray Fulcher

BRISBANE — More than 100 people attended the NUS National Education Conference here July 5-6.

The conference was organised around seminars featuring talks on aspects of the attack on higher education, and a series of workshops.

Motions passed by the conference included endorsement of the NUS National Week of Action, August 18-22, with a call for a National Day of Action within that week.

Other resolutions passed included support for East Timor's independence and support for the campaign to free Indonesia's political prisoners, notably Xanana Gusmao, Jose A. Belo, Dita Sari and Budiman Sujatmiko.

"Hanson Free Zones" on campus were also endorsed, and the conference condemned the ALP's proposal for a "voucher" scheme for higher education and called for a campaign that "does not rely on Labor to reverse the Liberals' attacks".
