Pilger film screened

DARWIN — Thirty people attended a screening of John Pilger's documentary film New Rulers of the World, which deals with the impact of the international financial institutions on the Third World.

The screening was organised by Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor at the NT University. Jon Land, from Action in Solidarity with Asia and the Pacific spoke about his recent visit to East Timor, and the decision by ASIET nationally to change its name to ASAP.

IWD band night

BRISBANE — One hundred people attended a fund-raising band night for the International Women's Day Collective at the Front Page on February 23. Bands included Razel, Girl Friday and Florence's Balcony.

Socialist Alliance council candidate 'locked-up'

MELBOURNE — Socialist Alliance candidates for the March 16 Moreland City Council election, Judy McVey and Jonathan Sherlock, addressed a fund-raising dinner for the Wills branch of the Socialist Alliance on February 23.

McVey, who is also a leader of the Refugee Action Collective, spoke of the need to take the refugee issue onto the streets and into the trade unions.

McVey pointed to the example of the February 16 street protest in Moreland. McVey and Sherlock were locked in a mock detention centre outside the Brunswick Town Hall to highlight the Socialist Alliance's policy of making Moreland a "refuge for refugees". Thirty supporters were present. More than 150 signatures were collected on a petition demanding freedom for refugees.

Visa granted to human rights campaigner

After six months of delay and obstruction, the Australian High Commission in London on February 19 granted British human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell a visa to visit Australia.

Tatchell was born in Australia but took out British citizenship in 1989. He had wanted to visit Australia to attend his stepfather's funeral.
