New Zealand Alliance supports Cuba

A call by US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson for the US government to end its illegal economic blockade of Cuba has been echoed in New Zealand by Alliance international affairs spokesperson Matt Robson.

"The American blockade of Cuba has been condemned by the United Nations and is illegal in terms of international law. It is causing immense suffering to the Cuban people and is an impediment to the social and political changes that they themselves want.

"New Zealand as a very small country has its own self-interest to consider in supporting moves that strengthen respect for international law and prevent powerful countries like the US from bullying weaker countries", Robson stated.

Robson called on the New Zealand government to put pressure on the US to end its "act of international lawlessness".
