MUA wins Manly ferry dispute

SYDNEY— After a week of morning community assemblies at Circular Quay, the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has won a collective agreement with the private operators of the new fast ferry service to Manly.

Ferry operator Bass and Flinders and the MUA signed a memorandum of understanding on February 18, which committed them to the negotiation of a collective agreement.

The memorandum addresses many of the concerns raised by the union, including pay increases for the workers and the addressing of serious issues with safety standards.

Bass and Flinders had previously refused to negotiate with the union, and had introduced a non-union agreement, which slashed wages by 25% and leave entitlements by 20%.

The MUA also demanded that Bass and Flinders provide adequate training for staff and ensure the vessels are properly serviced.

In a letter of thanks to supporters, Warren Smith, Sydney branch secretary of the MUA, said: "This has been a significant victory for not only the MUA but for all workers still struggling against employers who insist on using the Work Choices laws to the end."
