More messages on Green Left's 300th issue

December 10, 1997
Issue

Green Left Weekly plays a unique role in providing Australians with a true picture of what's happening here and abroad, as our media becomes increasingly controlled by fewer people and the ABC buckles under subtle and not so subtle political censorship from its master in Canberra.

David Bradbury, film-maker

Many congratulations to Green Left and everyone involved during the previous 300 runs. Green Left is definitely out in front in their support, and analysis, of Indigenous issues, as well as local and overseas items.

May there be at least another 300 runs.

Ray Jackson and the Indigenous Social Justice Association

I want to congratulate Green Left Weekly on its 300 issues. It is an essential part of the media. I am a subscriber and the CPSU is donating $300 as a birthday celebration. I also acknowledge the valuable work that Democratic Socialist activists have done in the CPSU.

Clare Moore, Qld secretary, Community and Public Sector Union

It is so important that media be accessible to activists and communities, which GLW is. GLW makes that vital link between social justice and environmental responsibility that is so obvious and so necessary.

Cam Walker, Friends of the Earth

I would like to congratulate all those involved in getting Green Left Weekly to 300 issues! It continues to be a great source of information and inspiration for me and countless other activists.

Sheila Suttner, secretary of Campaign Against Racial Exploitation (WA) and chairperson of the Communist Party of Australia (WA)

Green Left Weekly meets an urgent need for our community of social change activists, and that's giving the background to stories that the mainstream media doesn't want to print. Sharing information is crucial in our work towards justice for all creatures on earth.

Jo Vallentine, activist for a nuclear-free future and founding member of Jabiluka Action Group (WA)

Congratulations and best wishes for your continuing good work. Keep the faith! Le meas.

Fergus O'Dea, RM Distribution, the Irish Republican news and information service

300 issues of a great paper. A people-friendly, ideas-friendly forum. Something to celebrate! Thanks.

Christabel Chamarette, former Greens (WA) Senator

Green Left may not be Australia's only alternative media but it is unique in the prominence it gives to Indonesia and East Timor solidarity. Not a week goes by without some relevant coverage. Not only does it expose the crimes of the Suharto regime and Australia's complicity, it lets the voice of the Timorese and Indonesian anti-dictatorship struggles be heard. Sold on the street by activists in a dozen Australian cities from Darwin to Hobart, Green Left allows solidarity activists to keep in touch with the movement throughout the country.

Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor, Hobart

News, news, news! Green Left reports the truth, not the hype.

Dave Painter, editor of Idiom, Hobart's free street press.

The incessant ruling-class attacks on working people, the poor and oppressed is perhaps felt harshest in rural and regional Australia. In the mining communities of the West Coast of Tasmania we have endured the brutality of both Liberal and Labor's economic rationalist policies. Working conditions have deteriorated, working hours have been thrown back 100 years, health and safety in the mines is being compromised and what little dignity we had as hard rock miners has all but disappeared.

Our communities have borne the brunt of cutbacks in state and federal government services: they have tried to close our hospitals and created horrific levels of unemployment amongst our youth.

The continued success of Green Left Weekly has always been most welcome in the bleakness of our times. It not only continues to tell the truth but inspires many former union activists to fight for change.

It not only links us to comrades in the state, throughout Australia and internationally, but galvanises us to struggle with the community for a sane, rational and just society.

Congratulations to all involved in every aspect of the production and distribution of the paper.

Andrew Ian Jamieson, West Coast councillor and former president of the Tasmanian Mining Industry Union Council.

Congratulations, Green Left. We need as many alternatives to corporate-driven media as we can. You have led the way. Here's to another 300 to come. Keep up the good work.

Melanie Jones, campaign coordinator, the Wilderness Society, Tasmania

Green Left has consistently provided a place for the alternative news stories that the mainstream press won't tell us about. I'm always amazed that the Green Left team manages to produce such a high quality publication with so few resources. The style is accessible, but never talks down to its readership

I've read Green Left since it first came out and value the consistency of its stand against racism and its defence of land rights.

Sue Leigh, Campaign Against Racism member, Melbourne

Green Left Weekly has been of invaluable help in our line of work, that is in the political education of party cadres and members. In fact, GLW has become our main source of news and updates on the contemporary international working-class and socialist movement.

Looking forward to your 400th issue!

Manila-Rizal Revolutionary Committee, Education department, Philippines

Congratulations to GLW on reaching the 300th issue. The activists around GLW have a lot of credibility and standing that a lot of other left papers don't. The contribution that GLW has made is a good one and we wish you every success.

Dean Mighell, state secretary, Electrical Trades Union, Vic

Given the current media monopoly, there's a real need for an alternative voice. It's good to see Green Left Weekly having a go. Well Done. Keep up the struggle.

Luk Van Der Muehlen, sub-branch secretary, CFMEU energy division, Latrobe Valley

My hat off to Green Left Weekly on continuing to maintain an alternative news source in these challenging times. Every week I look forward to the arrival of Green Left with its vigour, variety, factual information and excellent presentation. Congratulations to the hard work and commitment of all those who make it possible.

Vivienne Porzsolt, Sydney

"Wherever death may surprise us, let it be welcome provided that this, our battle cry, has reached some receptive ear, that new hands reach out to pick up weapons, and others come forward to intone our funeral dirge with the staccato of machine guns and new cries of battle and victory." — Che Guevara, message to the Tricontinental

Thank you Green Left for always providing a receptive ear!

Karen Lee Wald, GLW correspondent, Havana, Cuba

Resistance and GLW have been wonderfully supportive of the launch of the new group ENuFF. ENuFF has been formed to campaign for the protection of Kakadu and other Aboriginal lands from uranium mining, as well as for the protection of Tasmania's forests from woodchipping.

In particular, Green Left has been covering the Jabiluka issue really well, which is very important as it is an urgent issue. GLW is the only national newspaper that represents the real stories of environmental and social injustices in this country.

Penny Law, Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future, Hobart

On behalf of Fretilin, let me wish all of our comrades involved with Green Left Weekly success on your 300th issue. We look forward to your continued cooperation in the struggle of East Timorese people for justice and independence.

Francisco Soares, coordinator of Fretilin (WA)

The relaunched Student Underground wishes you the best on your 300th issue. Green Left has always been in solidarity with youth and has carried good coverage of our struggles. The new Student Underground now has a goal — to release as many copies, with as many well-written, informative articles as Green Left has over the past seven years.
