Military war resisters

By Tom Jordan

Resisters Inside The Armed forces (RITA), an organisation formed by anti-Gulf War members of the armed forces of several countries, is organising an international conference of "military war resisters and movements devoted to the defence of citizens under uniform against war".

Patrick Le Trêhondat of RITA faxnews, says that sympathetic members of the European Parliament have been approached to allow the conference to be held inside the European Parliament House in Brussels.

Conference organisers hope the conference will allow resisters from different countries to exchange experiences, begin an international campaign for amnesty for members of the armed forces who refused orders, went absent without leave or objected to participation in the Gulf War, and to campaign for the removal of foreign troops from the Gulf.

The conference is expected to draw war resisters, representatives of soldiers' unions, antiwar movements, trade unions, churches and parliamentarians.
