February 14, 10.30am
TJ Hickey Park, cnr George & Phillip St Waterloo, Redfern
Sixteen years and no justice.
On 14 February 2004, the young Kamilaroi teenager was killed during an unwarranted police pursuit in Redfern. The highly rushed Coronial Inquest that followed contained serious omissions that suggests police corruption and an inadequate legal system. The refusal by successive NSW governments to bring the responsible police officers to court is testimony to the endemic racism First Nations people endure in Australia.
Please join the Hickey family in their 16 year long campaign for an independent inquiry into the death of TJ and to celebrate his memory.
We will meet at TJ Hickey Park (Crn George & Phillip St Waterloo) and march to Prince Alfred Park (Chalmers St Surry Hills) via the Redfern Police Station. We will then have a cook up with the Hickey family and their supporters (meat and vegan options). All are welcome.
Accessibility info: The total walking distance is 1.1 km (approx. 15 minutes walking). The route is wheelchair accessible, and for the most part flat. However the first 350 m on George St is uphill.
There are many footpaths in Prince Alfred Park and we will select a shaded picnic spot to suit everybody.
Unfortunately we will not have Auslan interpreters for speeches.
If you have any questions or concerns about accessibility, please contact Monica (0449575988).
