Marxism on main street

BY ADAM LEEMAN

NEWCASTLE — Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Party have officially opened their new office and bookshop here. Located in Newcastle's main street, at 472 Hunter Street, the building is close to City Hall and Civic train station.

The first public function on August 10 was the launch of two books on globalisation by Fidel Castro. Dick Nichols, from the DSP's national office, presented the books and pointed out that Capitalism in Crisis (Ocean Press) and Neo-Liberal Globalisation and the Third World (Resistance Books) illustrated how a small socialist country could resist capitalist globalisation.

Mel Sadler from Resistance stressed how important it was for young people to oppose globalisation by participating in Resistance and in the S11 protests against the World Economic Forum.

In a written message to the meeting, David Deutschmann of Ocean Press emphasised that Fidel Castro has been one of the most consistent, strong and radical critics of globalisation.

Alison Dellit proposed a champagne toast and appealed for supporters to help the new premises get established as an activist centre. The response was immediate with cash donations and pledges of a microwave, a telephone system and a VCR. When a sign-writer offered to paint Che Guevara's portrait on the street-front sign, a crane driver promised the loan of a crane to put it in place.
