Marrickville Peace Concert

Friday, October 28, 2016 - 19:30

REMEMBERING THE FIRST "PLEBISCITE" IN 1916.

Friday 28th October 2016 is the centenary of the day in 1916 when
Australians voted "NO!" in a referendum rejecting the forced
conscription of soldiers into the First World War.

Several events have been organised to commemorate that centenary
including a film festival, peace memorial, forums, photos, art and
documents exhibition. The concluding event is a peace concert which
will be held 7.30-10pm in Gumbramorra Hall in the heart of the Addison
Road Community Centre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville (Bus 428).

Performers at the concert include many people resident in the Inner
West – The Solidarity Choir rehearses in Erskineville, and they sing
in diverse languages and with joy and defiance some of the world's
most uplifting songs of freedom and justice
www.solidaritychoir.com.au;  Dennis Aubrey (Chippendale - street
entertainer and bar room bard from Sydney to NYC, Ireland and the UK);
Margaret Walters (Darlington – traditional style folk singer) – both
with a heart for social justice; Newtown’s Joe Flower and Harmony
Breeze conjure up the "Peace and Love" culture of San Francisco in the
1960's and take audiences on a Magic Carpet Ride with their monthly
concerts at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. They join friends, Rose
of Cimarron, Yossarian and Billy Shears to form the Trippy Hippy Band,
 performing 60s anti-war classics; www.joeandharmony.com;   Murat
Kücükarslan, a young musicologist from Turkey now living in
Marrickville, plays the Turkish Lute of baglama and will be singing
songs about teenage Turkish boys conscripted to fight at Gallipoli
(see attachment)

Other performers are from further afield – Sonia Bennett – songstress
from Seven Hills, poets Simon Lenthan and Greg North from the Blue
Mountains; Chloë & Jason Roweth (from Milthorpe, Central Western NSW)
who present songs, poems and yarns with the engaging warmth of real
old-style bush entertainment. Among their myriad projects is a CD
called The Riderless Horse, over 30 songs and poems from the time of
the First World War showing insights into a young nation’s experience
both in the trenches and on the home front.

A peace concert has been held annually for several years in memory of
the late Denis Kevans, poet and peace activist, and the proceeds are
for the Agent Orange Justice campaign. www.agentorangejustice.org.au
(Three million people are still affected by the use of poison Agent
Orange/Dioxin during the Vietnam War.)
