Free society I

"[Free] trade creates the habits of freedom... It gives people, consumers, the opportunity to demand product, which is part of a free society... And the habits of freedom begin to create the expectations of democracy and demands for better democratic institutions. Societies that open to commerce across their borders are more open to democracy within their borders." — George "the Crusader" Bush, April 4, 2002.

Free society II

"Kevin Bales, author of Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, estimated there are 27 million slaves in the world today who produce an annual [US]$13 billion in goods and services... Bales said a slave in the United States cost about $1,000 in the 1850s, but one can be purchased in other countries today for as little as $40." — East-West Wire news service, Honolulu, November 18.

Free society III

"Children are dying daily of malnutrition in Argentina as a result of the catastrophic economic crisis in the world's fourth biggest exporter of food... The Centre for Child Nutrition Studies, which advises the World Health Organisation, has said 20% of children in Argentina are suffering from malnutrition." — British Guardian, November 25.

Right on the money!

"{Argentina's] production minister, Anibal Fernandez, last week attributed the child deaths to 'a sick society and a ruling class that are sons of bitches, all of them, myself included'." — report in British Guardian, November 25.

And then hang 'em high!

"'Contrary to my image as a Texan with two guns on my side, I'm more comfortable with a posse', Mr Bush said, according to an aide who was there." — New York Times, November 22, reporting on the Bush's call for NATO leaders to join the atttack on Iraq.
