Tough measures

"John Major will take his revenge on the greedy bosses of privatised companies by denying them peerages and knighthoods ... The massive snub comes as a new Mail on Sunday survey reveals that the bosses of all 12 regional electricity companies have received pay rises of between 73 and 253 per cent in the past seven months since privatisation." — The Mail on Sunday, London, July 7.

Not much competition

"I have had a gutful of this continual bickering and speculation. We have in Nick Greiner the best premier in Australia and I am not challenging him and have never contemplated it." — NSW attorney general Peter Collins on speculation that Greiner might be replaced following his near-loss of the recent state elections.

Job security

"We have cut numbers, but we still have twice as many as we need ... There is no-one left who thinks they have a job with Telecom for life, whether they are good, bad or indifferent." — Top Telecom manager Michael MaKieve.

Hard times

"It is understood the wedding cost Mr Packer $2.5 million ... A fleet of trucks ferried fresh lobster, prawns and other expensive delicacies into Rogate in preparation for the reception. And guests reportedly supped on more than 2000 bottles of expensive Krug champagne." — Sun-Herald, July 28, describing the marriage of Gretel Packer, only daughter of Kerry Packer.

What campaign?

"We are not about to give up. We are not about to concede defeat. this campaign will take a few more months. The task the union movement has now is to ensure that the lost real income to those that have lost the most is returned gradually over time." — ACTU secretary Bill Kelty on the "campaign" for Accord Mark VI.

And better for it

"I do think the federal government without Paul Keating is, well, incomplete." — NSW opposition leader Bob Carr.
