Pragmatist

"From the moral point of view, there is no difference between personal terror and collective terror. Here and there blood is spilled, here and there people are killed. One must look and judge it from the point of view of the utility of that means, the use of personal terror, in leading to the goal." — Israeli Premier Yitzhak Shamir, marking the anniversary of the terrorist Stern Gang, of which he was a leader.

Poser

"Which banks are still bastards?" — Cover headline of the Bulletin.

Gentle persuasion

The federal opposition "has produced a document on winning the 'war of words' on consumption tax that has a tank on the front cover, along with a fighter plane, surface-to-air missile, automatic rifle, battleship, a hand gun and hand grenade." — Sydney Morning Herald, September 4.

Half a quid is better than one

"This bloke is the full Labor quid." — New Zealand opposition leader Mike Moore, introducing NSW Labor leader Bob Carr.

What's the rush?

After the International Labour Organisation reported that Section 45D of the Trade Practices Act violates international conventions on the right to strike and freedom of association, the director-general of the Confederation of Australian Industry said the CAI would oppose repeal of 45D because, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the "report did not represent the ILO's final position as the matter was likely to be discussed again in March 1993."

Others were OK?

"Strathfield was one gun massacre too many." — NSW Premier Nick Greiner.
