Lesbian Festival '91

By Janet Fraser

SYDNEY — Lesbian Festival '91 continues all this week (through July 14) with art shows, a trade fair, dance party, workshops, cabaret and films. A cafe at Glebe High School can supply tickets, conference information, registration and general updates.

Within the festival is the National Lesbian Conference. With more than 1000 lesbians expected to attend, Sydney will be buzzing with positive lesbian energy. Mindful that the lesbian community is unendingly diverse, the conference aims to strengthen lesbian culture by providing a forum for that diversity.

More than 100 workshops will include: lesbian body image; counsellor and client relationships; Koori culture breakdown — the effects of addiction, dependency and aculturisation. (Koori lesbians will receive 10% of festival profit in an effort to "pay the rent".)

Perhaps the climax of the week is the Opera House concert on Sunday, entitled "Living Our Passion". The concert ranges over Bangarra Aboriginal Dance Group, Sue Ann Post, Judy Small, Topp Twins Trio, Jive With Jeanette and three opera singers: Nerida, Deborah and Donna (yes, the duet from Lakmè is on the program).

Add to this sign language, consistent wheelchair access, billeting, child care and ticket prices arranged to your salary and you have a pretty well-rounded week. Get festival golden guides from a sound bookshop or festival venue (or ring 660 5831).
