Latin American left and revolutionary parties

MANAGUA — The meeting of Latin American left and revolutionary parties held here July 16-19, has hailed a campaign for university funding as a fight to defend the gains of the Sandinista revolution. The universities have taken the UNO government to the Supreme Court, as they have almost run out of money. The Nicaraguan constitution states that 6% of the national budget is to be allocated to universities, but for "technical reasons" the government has not been handing over the money. The government's apparent aim is to close down the public university system and/or reintroduce fees, which few can afford. Photo, by Chandra Hodgson, shows university students at a July 14 rally.
