Latin America solidarity boosted

Issue

Some 80 people packed the Resistance Centre on July 1 for a Latin America solidarity conference organised by the Australia-Venezuela Solidarity Network (AVSN), Australia Solidarity with Latin America (ASLA) and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) committee.

Venezuela's charge d'affaires in Australia, Nelson Davila, gave an inspiring update on the revolutionary developments in his country, stressing the importance of AVSN's work in Australia and the role of Green Left Weekly in countering media lies about the revolution.

ASLA and FMLN activists spoke in other sessions about the struggles for liberation in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Commenting on the brutal imperialist-backed repression in El Salvador, Socialist Alliance member Cristobal Zelaya emphasised the need for people in Australia to support the alliance "to build the revolution here".

The final panel discussed building solidarity in Australia, with an emphasis on the role of young people in revolutionary change. The conference concluded with a multimedia presentation on Che Guevara and performances by local artists. For more information, visit http://www.venezuelasolidarity.org.
