KONY 2012. Why military intervention is never the answer.

Friday, March 16, 2012 - 18:30

Public meeting

Guest speaker: Bersanji M Ibrahim (activist from Somalia).

The Kony2012 advocacy campaign by Invisible Children has gone viral. It's successfully changed the scope of 'humanitarian marketing'. It's also a film rife with 'half-truths'. Kony2012 falsely insinuates that Uganda is still at war; that night commuters are still in Uganda; that Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army are the only sources of atrocity in the region; and that white people, especially Americans, are going to solve the problem. It advocates US military intervention and paints the Ugandan people as passive and in need of 'saving'. In a nutshell, it's a pro-war, paternalistic, and racist. In Melbourne over 18,000 people have clicked attending for the April 20 'Cover the night' event. If you are one of those people we welcome you to join this discussion.
