MELBOURNE — Free from corporate sponsorship and government control, 3CR brings the community social justice radio with integrity. They have tried to sue us, investigate us and to keep us quiet but 3CR prevails because it is the uncensored and outspoken voice of the community. 3CR continues to demonstrate its independence in a world of restricted media ownership and content dictated by "market forces".
Unlike the information provided by mainstream media, 3CR broadcasts stories about real people's lives and issues. With hundreds of community groups airing their views — Kooris, women, environmentalists, community language groups, social justice groups, trade unions, lesbian and gay groups, community artists, alternative and local musicians — 3CR remains committed to true media diversity.
3CR's current affairs programs cover local and global issues. 3CR has covered provided unique coverage of the liberation struggle in East Timor over the past 12 months. With 12 years of East Timor programs under its belt, 3CR's activists were well-placed to understand, and report first-hand, the destruction of East Timor by the retreating Indonesian army and militias.
Locally 3CR has committed itself to provide access for the Aboriginal community. Programs like Not Another Koori Show, Songlines, Koori Survival Show, Ilbijerri Chat, Stonefree and Mangrook are a proud part of 3CR's community access broadcasting.
3CR is proud of its fearless coverage of prison issues including the privatisation of prisons and the scandalous use of immigration detention centres. 3CR extended its prison issues program, Doin' Time to an hour after the station received a petition from women prisoners at the Metropolitan Women's Correctional Centre.
3CR relies on the support of the community and our 400 volunteers to keep on air. To stay alive and independent, 3CR's "Uncensored and Outspoken Radiothon" will be conducted from June 12-18.
