Justice for Carl Woods

PERTH — One hundred and fifty people held a candlelight vigil on the steps of Parliament House on June 15 to remember and demand justice for Carl Woods, who died in police custody on April 11. A relative who saw Woods' body in the morgue said he'd never seen anyone bashed so severely.

Speaker after speaker emphasised the need for Aboriginal people to take a stand against police brutality. "We've got to blacken those streets!" said one.

Woods' father, Humphrey Woods, told Green Left Weekly the family had decided to get an independent pathologist to examine the body, following the official autopsy. "We didn't want to bury the evidence with Carl. We won't stop until we get justice!"

A meeting to organise a Justice for Carl Woods Campaign is planned for June 27, 6pm, 79 Stirling St, Perth. Phone Mingli on (07) 9472 7950 or Marc on (07) 9361 0240.
