KURDISTAN: Solidarity helps stop attacks on communists

The following is abridged from a letter sent on April 20 by Rebwar Ahmed, secretary of the central committee of the Worker Communist Party of Iraq, to all those organisations which supported the WCPI's campaign to defend itself against attacks by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Iraqi Kurdistan (northern Iraq) in March and April.

Freedom loving people,

I am writing to inform you that the circumstances which arose between us and the PUK have finished, after two months of dispute and three dialogue sessions between the two parties.

The problem arose when the security directorate of the PUK arrested three of our comrades and when their ministry of interior affairs raised in court a list of allegations against our party [in order] to ban its activities.

The PUK released our comrades on April 17 and repealed the court action against our party on April 19.

The WCPI sincerely appreciates your stand in support of the liberation, humanity, progress and freedom of political prisoners. The efforts of hundreds of parties, organisations, institutions, publications and individuals in Europe, Canada, Australia, America and Turkey, and the efforts of the large number of people in Iranian Kurdistan, defended freedom and progress.

In addition to defending itself, our party had stood against a planned attack against freedom, progressive trends and the human rights of the masses, women in particular. So, the parties and people which stand with our party have earned the honour of participating in this just struggle.

I reiterate my appreciation.
