Iraq pre-election fire sale

Issue

Kamala Emanuel, Hobart

Twenty people attended an "Iraq pre-election fire sale" on the Salamanca Lawns on January 29.

The Peace Coalition organised the action to draw attention to the massive privatisation of Iraqi assets that has been prepared or already taken place prior to the election.

"We've been told that the election will be the first opportunity for Iraqi people to participate in the democratic process", Peace Coalition activist Alex Bainbridge told Green Left Weekly. "Our action was designed to inform people about all the ways that the US will still be calling the shots after the election — not least by means of the binding contracts already awarded to dodgy US corporations like Halliburton and Bechtel."

Information about the privatisation of Iraqi assets will be made available on the Peace Coalition website: <http://www.peacetasmania.org>.
