'Hunger trap'

If the earth is producing enough food for all, why is 70% of the world's population fighting hunger? This is one of the questions to be addressed by "Breaking the Hunger Trap", a conference in Sydney from October 18 to 22.

The conference, marking the 30th anniversary of Freedom from Hunger, will address four main themes: the use and ownership of land; economic systems and democracy; militarisation and violence; law and education. Organisers say there will be a special emphasis on women and on the environment.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear a range of prominent international and Australian speakers, and to discuss issues in small groups.
