Green Left Weekly's 2006 Fighting Fund: $95,000 to raise in 10 weeks

Issue

If the Green Left Weekly Fighting Fund is going to make its target of $250,000 by the end of this year we will have to raise $95,000 over the next 10 weeks. That is a challenge, but we've made this sort of dash before and we can do it again.

Last week our supporters raised $8844, which is about $700 less than what is needed every week between now and the end of the year. It brings the total raised so far to $155,949, or 62% of target.

In this last part of the year, Green Left Weekly supporters organise a lot of major fundraising events: dinners, film nights, raffles and the like. Such functions raised $4740 last week. If there is a function coming up in your city or in a city near you, please try to support it (see the Activist Calendar on page 23).

And then there are the donations. Last week, a subscriber rocked up to our office in Sydney with a cheque for $1000. Thank you CR. Can anyone else do that?

But you don't have to turn up at the door to deliver your donation. You can deposit it at: Greenleft, Commonwealth Bank, BSB 062-006, Account No. 901992. Alternatively, send a cheque or money order to PO Box 515, Broadway NSW 2007, phone it through toll-free on 1800 634 206 (within Australia), or donate online at .

There are widespread reports that US President George Bush has conceded a parallel between the Iraq and Vietnam wars, and in particular between the current situation and the Tet Offensive of 1968-69, which turned US public opinion against the war. "The president was making a point that he's made before, which is that terrorists try to exploit pictures and try to use the media as conduits for influencing public opinion in the United States", White House press secretary Tony Snow said later, reinterpreting Bush's comments. "The important thing to remember is that the president is determined it's not going to happen with Iraq, because you have a president who is determined to win", he said.

"We do not think that there has been a flip-over point, but more importantly, from the standpoint of the government and the standpoint of this administration, we are going to continue pursuing victory aggressively."

The anti-war movement and Green Left Weekly still have a lot of work to do. Please help us.
