Green Left TV's Zebedee Parkes has had his short film My Friend in Detention has been officially selected to be screened at the Washington DC-based Global Impact Film Fest later this month.

The documentary examines the impact refugee activism in Australia has on people on both sides of the fence by focusing on the relationship of Sarah, a Perth-based refugee activist, and Cali a Tamil refugee who was detained in WA's Curtin detention centre. Filmed over several years, it includes footage of Sarah's first experience of a detention centre and Cali's first speech after getting his freedom.

Parkes' first experience filming the refugee campaign was when he spontaneously jumped on a bus that was travelling two days into the desert to Leonora detention centre in January 2011. His short film of the experience was screened at a number of events.

A refugee rights activist, Parkes writes about the campaign for Green Left Weekly, as well as filming, editing and producing content for Green Left TV.
