Snap elections in Greece: The road of hope has opened!

The defeat of the Greek government coalition in today's final vote for the election of the President of the Republic leads the country to snap elections on January 25.

This is a defeat of the extreme austerity policies imposed on the Greek people by the troika, in accordance with the authoritarian governance of Samaras's government.

The road of hope is now open, not only for Greece, but for Europe as a whole. With a decisive mandate given to SYRIZA through popular verdict, a government of the left in Greece can put an halt to the memorandum regime and trigger progressive developments all over Europe.

The European Left and its allies commit all their forces in a dynamic European campaign of solidarity and political support to the Greek people and SYRIZA.

The eyes and hopes of all the peoples of Europe are now on Greece.

[The EL is a Europe-wide political party that formed in 2004. It is composed of 26 member parties -- including Syriza, and seven observer parties. Visit www.european-left.org for more information.]
