Granma comments on upheaval
HAVANA — In a full-page editorial on May 6, the Cuban newspaper Granma says that while vote-hunting in Miami recently, President Bush predicted social upheavals in Cuba. Bush obviously did not realise, it notes, that he was the one sitting on a powder keg.
Granma says not only does the United States exploit other Third World nations, it has created a Third World within its own borders.
The editorial points out that while Los Angeles was burning, more than a million Havana residents, and millions across the island, had turned out for one of the most spirited May Day parades in Cuban history. It was a clear rejection of the US model which Washington is trying to impose by economic blockade and force on Cubans.
The Cuban daily points out that it is in the United States, and possibly in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe, where the new leaders are rushing to copy the US model, that the army has to be called out to confront the people, not in Cuba as Bush mistakenly has suggested.
