GetUp!'s weak renewables target

Spain is pushing ahead with its production of renewable energy.

The community campaigning organisation GetUp! recently emailed subscribers seeking donations so it could develop a pathway to 50% renewables by 2030.

Fifty percent renewables by 2030 is also Labor's current target. While it is an improvement on Labor's previous policies, it is not sufficient. The South Australian government has a 50% renewables target by 2025; the ACT has 100% by 2025.

We are facing a climate emergency, and Australia needs a rapid shift to renewable energy. Most climate campaigners have long called for 100% renewable energy, plus an end to coal exports.

Much analysis has already been done on how to achieve 100% renewables rapidly.

In 2010, Beyond Zero Emissions published a comprehensive plan on how Australia could move to 100% renewable energy in ten years. Even the Australia Energy Market Operator has modelled the transition to 100% renewables by 2030.

Environmental campaigners have a responsibility to educate the public about what is needed for meaningful action on climate change. Many have been consistent in their strong demands.

The great work by other campaigners may well be undermined by GetUp!'s support for a weak target. With 800,000 members and a budget of around $8 million, GetUp! has significant influence. It has a responsibility to use that influence wisely.
