Gay and lesbian rights book launched

By Kath Gelber

SYDNEY — Around 40 people attended a launch of the Democratic Socialist Party's new book, Socialism and the Struggle for the Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men, on July 26. The meeting was addressed by Sydney writer Stephen Dunne, gay activist and radio broadcaster Michael Schembri and DSP member Kath Gelber.

Dunne congratulated the DSP on publishing the book, noting that it is an important reminder of socialist involvement in the movement from its beginnings in Australia, and praising its vision of a multi-pronged liberation movement for all humanity.

Schembri criticised some theoretical aspects of the book, notably its exploration of identity politics and the importance of community and coming out. This led to a spirited discussion about what constitutes a political movement, and whether a gay and lesbian movement exists in Sydney today.

While some were of the opinion that the movement in Sydney had lost impetus, others emphasised the potential for a political movement, evident in recent gay and lesbian anti-racism rallies and the campaign against violence.
