Free the speech!

Issue

Chris Samuel, Sydney

I am no stranger to being given unsolicited material on the streets of Sydney. Most of the time I'll take it to check out what they have to say. After all, we have the democratic right to freedom of speech.

On September 8, I joined other free-speech activists at Sydney Town Hall steps to protest against a development application put to the City of Sydney council that would allow Rupert Murdoch's newspaper MX to be distributed on city streets for a fee of around $360,000 a year, plus $110 per day (see article on this page). The action was part of the campaign against the deal by the Sydney Free Speech Alliance.

A petition and sign-on statement calling on the council to reject the MX deal and uphold freedom of speech can be downloaded from <http://www.greenleft.org.au>. For more information about the campaign, email <marcec@greenleft.org.au>.
