The worst drought in 60 years in the Horn of Africa has sparked a severe food crisis and high malnutrition rates. More than 10 million people are now affected in areas of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda. Food prices have risen substantially in the region, pushing many moderately poor households over the edge.
Speakers: Degeufe Hailu, acting Vice-President of Horn of Africa Relief Development Agency will talk about the reasons for this current crisis - the legacy of colonialism, imperialism and underdevelopment that the Horn of Africa has suffered. Tony Iltis, Green Left Weekly journalist, recently returned from the north of Africa will talk about the waste inherent in capitalist agricultural production and 'aid' in times of famine.
