Film screening: Yellowcake: The dirt behind uranium.

Thursday, September 27, 2012 - 18:30

Thursday, September 27

Uranium mining, the first link in the chain of nuclear development, has managed again and again to keep itself out of the public eye. A web of propaganda, misinformation and lies covers its 60-year history. The third largest uranium mine in the world was located in the East German provinces of Saxony and Thuringia. Until 1990 WISMUT supplied the Soviet Union with 220,000 tons of uranium. The film accompanies for several years the biggest clean-up operation in the history of uranium mining. Premiere of this important film directed by prominent German Filmmaker Joachim Tschirner. 6:30pm. State Library of Victoria, Theatrette, Entry 3, 179 La Trobe St, City. The evening will include speakers, discussion and light refreshments. Entry by donation. Organised by Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, the Goethe Institut and the Australian Conservation Foundation.
