Film screening: The Battle of Algiers

Friday, February 18, 2011 - 19:00

A screening of an all-time classic film, at a time of solidarity with the people power revolutions in the Middle East. Depicting the Algerian independence struggle against the French, The Battle of Algiers shows the struggle of the oppressed against their rulers - a struggle reflected on Middle Eastern streets today.
Despite being widely awarded as a film, it was banned in France for 5 years, and censored in other Western countries. It was an inspiration for the Black Panthers, the Irish and Kashmiri independence movements. More recently, the film was screened to key parts of the US military to highlight the challenges in the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
