Fight for free speech in Adelaide

By Jo Ellis

ADELAIDE — Green Left Weekly is under attack here. The city council will not allow GLW to be distributed in the mall without a permit.

The permit will cost $10 per week per distributor. The council also wants Green Left distributors to wear numbered "bibs".

"This is a free speech issue", Resistance activist Kathy Newnam told Green Left Weekly. "The democratic right to express a political opinion should not be limited to those who can afford to pay for it. If GLW cannot be distributed in the mall, then it sets a precedent for other dissenting voices to be banned."

Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Party have initiated a campaign for the right to free speech to counter this attack. A rally is planned for June 26 at 5pm, near the silver balls sculpture in Rundle Mall. More that 16 groups have sponsored the rally.

If you would like to join the campaign for free speech, phone (08) 8231 6982.
