Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said on January 30 that Latin America needed to respond with a strong, united front against the anti-immigration measures of US President Donald Trump, TeleSUR English said. It comes as Bolivian President Evo Morales called for Mexico to "look south" and support efforts to build Latin American unity and integration to cuonter Trump's attacks.

The two left-wing leaders are part of the 11-nation anti-imperialist Bolivarian Alliance for the People's of Our America, which was formed in 2004 by Venezuela and Cuba as a counterweight to the power of the US in the region. Along with others, they have pushed a range of Latin American integration initiatives, such as the COmunity of Caribbean and Latin Amerocan Nations (CELAC), which forced in 2010 and unites all nations in the Americas except the US and Canada.

Correa said there needs to be “a regional stand to defend the main type of mobility, which is human mobility, the defence of human rights, reminding the United States that they have been a country of migrants,” said Correa in an interview with Spain’s Cadena Ser.

Bolivian President Evo Morales also called for Latin American unity on January 27 after Trump targeted Mexico over migration and reiterated his plans to build a wall on the US’s southern border. He tweeted: “I call on our Mexican brothers to look more towards the south, to jointly build unity based on our (shared) Latin American and Caribbean heritage.”

TeleSUR English said on February 1 that Morales also tweeted a proposal for Mexico to rejoin the Group of 77 bloc of nations from the global South, and to help build CELAC.
