Democracy Betrayed, Tasmanians Betrayed

TAP is now planning a ‘Democracy Betrayed, Tasmanians Betrayed’ rally. Now that the Federal Government has signed off on all permits for Gunns’ proposed pulp mill, it is time to deliver through Tasmania’s biggest ever rally the strongest possible message to Parliament and to potential joint venture partners of Gunns that the people are not cowed, not wavering, not beaten, but will fight on to protect their livelihood, their health, their democracy, and their island.
The rally will target the betrayal of democracy and the corruption of due process; the refusal of politicians to represent the interests of the people; and ongoing public subsidies for private gain at the expense of public services. It will target the infamous Pulp Mill Assessment Act and Section 11. Many serious risks remain unexamined and the rally will show that there is no social licence for the pulp mill and that the people will not tolerate any further federal or state government support for Gunns’ proposal.
